Robot R1
Juneau, Alaska
This is the R1.
It is used for testing of software and hardware in robot
designing. Being my first robot, it is a test bed for ideas. I
learned a great deal about constructing and programming
robots, and a big list of what not to do. Besides being fun to
play with, I haven't found much of a use for it yet.
Technical Information:
-Mini-ITX 1GHz motherboard, 256M RAM, 6GB
harddrive
-Motorola HCs12 microcontroller
-Firewire webcam
-Rear USB webcam (not shown)
-802.11b communication
-pan and tilt servo head with camera and lights
-Sound and microphone
-12v 12 amp-hour Sealed Lead acid battery for 4 hours of
use
-4 DC gear motors with independent controllers
-Jointed body turning system with position feedback
It is remotely controlled by an operator using a joystick. It's
range is determined by the kind of antenna the remote is
using. with a standard laptop pcmcia card it is about 200ft.
I use this for experiments with different autonomous
programs and remote contrtol software.

Side view of R1 during field testing
The maximum range I could get with omni-directional
antennas was around 300 ft. (the distance from far right
field to third base)
New Plans for R1 (June 2006)
I am planning to redo R1 to use my new steering and suspension design. It will be able to
drive sideways and diagonal and turn in place.
I am also adding these things:
-improved range antenna
-better video recording and transmitting
-improved lights
-autonomous programming
-front and back sensors
-acceleration sensor
-carrying handles
